My Gear

I often get asked about the camera equipment I use. Over the years I’ve gathered quite a lot as you might imagine so I won’t include everything here, but below is a list of the gear I currently use on a regular basis.

Sony A7III

My primary camera body is currently my Sony A7III mirrorless camera. Being a mirrorless camera, I get a great understanding of the exposure ahead of taking the photo. It’s got great auto-focus, is light and compact, is easy to handle, and takes great photos via its 24mp sensor.

This is my most used lens currently. It’s extremely versatile, is very sharp, and focuses quickly and silently. Always my starting point for almost any situation I care to mention.

Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 Di III RXD

Love this telephoto lens. It’s slightly unusual 70-180 focal range is Tamron’s take on the traditional 70-200 range, but by loosing the extra 20mm at the long end means that the lens is able to be kept compact in size and easier to carry around! It’s super sharp too and performs exceptionally well.

Tamron 70-180mm f/2.8 Di III VXD

A lovely, compact, light and sharp, wide-angle lens. Wide enough to capture some amazing wide vistas and also has super close focussing capabilities, which make for some cool wide angle macro (1:2) images.

Tamron 17-28mm f/2.8 Di III RXD

Wow, what can I say about this lens? I love the reach, and the inbuilt image stabilisation, it’s compact size, and I can fit it in my camera bag if needs be! It doesn’t weigh 3 tons either which is a bonus if I’m out taking wildlife photos for a few hours. I love this lens!

Tamron 150-500mm f/5-6.7 Di III VC VXD

This has a great wide aperture allowing some lovely creamy backgrounds. It’s great for portraits and low light situations. I don’t take enough shots with it really and must try and get it on the camera more often than I do!

Sony FE 85mm f/1.8

A great, affordable flashgun. Not quite up to the standard of my Metz flashgun for my Pentax (see below), but more than adequate for my needs. Only time will if its as durable!?

GODOX TT685s Flashgun

I have two of these brilliant Rotolight LED lights. They can be used as a constant light source or in Flash mode (which doubles their output). Extremely versatile, and lovely and soft diffused light. I use with an Elinchrom hotshoe trigger and they’re great! Not a replacement for a flashgun in power terms, but really versatile and they run of mains or battery power

Pentax k3ii

Before I bought the Sony, I’ve always shot on Pentax camera. They’re brilliant, and massively underrated in my opinion. Ok, the auto-focus isn’t the best in certain situations, but everything else is great. The handling is perfect, its fully weather-sealed (as are the lenses), has a great 24mp sensor, built in GPS and even an astrotracer for astrophotography. Surely one of the best DSLR cameras ever made

Pentax-DA smc 35mm f/2.4

A super light and compact 35mm lens. Put it on the camera, and wander around doing some discrete street photography, or use it for some landscape work, either way its a great little lightweight, sharp prime lens.

A lovely, fast (f/1.8), lightweight, sharp, “nifty fifty” lens. What else is there to say, every camera bag needs a 50mm!

Pentax-DA smc 50mm f/1.8

Currently my most used lens on the Pentax system. A really well built and solid macro lens. Switch it into manual focus, get up nice and close and grab some great macro. It’s also a very sharp portrait lens too, bonus!

K&F Concept PK/DA to NEX Lens Mount Adapter

One of the cheapest but most valuable pieces of kit in my bag currently. This little lens adaptor lets me mount my Pentax lenses onto my Sony camera body and allows aperture ring adjustment too for fully manual control. Best £30 I ever spent!

Metz 58 AF-1 Flashgun

A brilliant flashgun, powerful and versatile. Has served me well atop of my Pentax cameras over the years. A well built, quality German item with a great consistent output.
